Chapter Twenty
When Sam came to, she was standing in what appeared to be a large courtroom, one that looked like the pictures of the Greek Parthenon she’d seen. She turned her head at the sound of fighting and was shocked to find Marcus and Nicolas trying their hardest to reach one another, but a force field was keeping them separated.
Nicolas had resumed his own dark features since her dream. It appeared as if he were attacking himself through a mirrored reflection.
"What are you doing here?" Marcus growled at Nicolas. "You don't belong here."
"If I recall, Brother," Nicolas said with venom, "I was here before you showed up, so one would assume you, Brother, do not belong here."
"I’m not your brother and I’d sooner die a slow and painful death than share my heritage or my dreams with you, Nicolas," Marcus spat back.
"A slow and painful death, huh? Now that can be arranged." Nicolas looked pleased at the thought.
"Stop it, both of you," Samantha said, walking toward them. Neither one of them paid her any attention. She yelled again and reached for both of their shoulders, only to have her hands rush through them.
Sam waved her hand in front of Marcus's face. "Hello?”
He and Nicolas continued to fight, throwing daggers with their words back and forth. About the time Sam thought she might lose her mind, Julie walked into the room.
"Stop it, both of you," Julie yelled as she approached them. They both stopped and turned to look at her. She was wearing a bloody white T-shirt and her jeans were ripped.
"Thank God, Julie, they won't listen to me," Sam said as she walked up to Julie. As she got closer, she noticed Julie's head was bleeding and there was something protruding from her chest and stomach.
Sam gasped. It was Julie's broken collarbone protruding out of her chest, and a small metal pipe jutted out from her stomach. Sam swallowed back bile.
Julie didn't stop to talk to her, didn't even acknowledge her presence. She continued walking toward the boys, passing through Sam as she went. Sam grabbed her stomach and doubled over at the creepy sensation of having someone walk through her.
"Can no one see me?" Sam asked, giving it a last ditch effort. Again, no one responded. She sighed and walked over to a chair at the far end of the room. Samantha decided her only option was to be an observer, someone standing outside the window, watching the events unfold.
